Massage Cupping Back to Top
Massage Cupping is a very old treatment with evidence of use dating back to 3000 BCE. The first appearance was in Egypt in 1550 BCE and China was in 1000 BCE. Hippocrates (father of western medicine) in 400 BCE - applied as part of ‘humoral’ medicine balancing blood, phlegm, yellow bile, black bile - imbalances that led to sickness.
What can cupping help with?
Opens the upper jiao to treat cold, heat, and wind invasions, treats common cold, pneumonia, bronchitis, emphysema and tight connective tissue/scar therapy/adhesions and chronically tight muscles and deep tissue.
Western Medical Explanations: Cupping moves stagnant blood and lymph, releases adhesions in the connective tissue and can loosen scar tissue. Also reduces inflammation and allow for better blood flow.
Here at Adagio, the Fire or Air technique is offered depending on preference and specific need. Try it as an add-on to a massage or get a foot reflexology treatment with essential oils/herbs and foot soak together to fully rejuvenate yourself.
What should I expect?
With massage cupping, there can be some side effects. When relieving the 'sha' or blood stagnation, there can be some bruise-like marks where the cups are applied. Some people experience more petechiae while others get a little pink. These marks should go away within 4-7 days depending on the amount of blood stagnation. If you prefer a light treatment, I can adjust the cups to suit your needs.
The cups are applied usually on the back and should remain covered for up to 24 hrs after treatment.
By opening the channels and increasing circulation, those areas are sensitive to wind. Just like if you leave the window open at night and a draft hits your neck, you are likely to get a 'kink' in the neck or increase in muscle tension.
More vigorous cupping can cause soreness just like with a deep tissue massage. Make sure you drink plenty of water after any massage or cupping treatment to help move the toxins out. Arnica is usually applied after treatment to help motivate the movement of the stagnant blood.
